ABOUT ME

Ava Read - Clinical Psychologist

I am a registered Clinical Psychologist and have been practicing psychology for approximately 8 years. I completed my Honors and Master's degree in psychology through the University of New England Armidale.

Prior to opening my own psychology clinic, I have worked within the private hospital inpatient and outpatient sector of mental health. I was the senior clinical psychologist for a 25-bed private mental health unit for approximately 4 years. I have worked with clients individually and also have facilitated numerous group therapy programs including DBT, CBT, ACT, Addiction Group Therapy, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Group Therapy.

I am taking referrals for individuals 13 years and older.

I have experience working with a range of difficulties including:

  • Depression, bipolar and mood disorders
  • Anxiety, PTSD and OCD
  • Chronic pain, conversion disorders, sleep disturbance and unexplained medical conditions
  • Adjustment challenges such as injury, divorce, retirement etc.
  • Grief and loss
  • Interpersonal issues including relationships, parenting and family challenges
  •  Personality disorders
  • Eating disorders
  • Addiction (alcohol, substance misuse, gambling)
  • Sexual dysfunction, difficulties with intimacy/closeness
  • Confidence/self-doubt problems etc.
  • Emotion regulation issues, low self-esteem and self-sabotaging behaviors
  • Developmental and Behavioral Disorders such as Autism, ADD, ADHD, Conduct and Oppositional Defiant Disorder
  • Individuals and families living with a disability

I have completed further training following Master's degree including:

  • Graduate diploma in Addiction Studies; University of Tasmania
  •  Supervisors Training Program; Accredited as a board approved supervisor
  • Core training in Intense Short-Term Psychotherapy (3 years)
  • Advance Training in Intense Short-Term Psychotherapy (2 years)

I am competent in practicing commonly used therapeutic methods such as CBT, DBT and ACT. However, my primary focus is in Intense Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). This is a valid and reliable psychotherapy that focuses on helping people recognize, understand and overcome their automatic patterns of operating and how they see and relate to themselves, others and the world in general. In ISTDP it is these automatic unconscious patterns that contribute to a large proportion of an individual's struggle.

Adjunct to my clinical work I have also been active in my provision of supervisory services. I have been the primary supervisor for provisional psychologists completing their internship (4 + 2 program) and also provided face to face supervision for Clinical Master's psychology students completing their placement. Furthermore, for 2 years I have been employed by the University of New England Armidale providing supervision via Zoom for provisional psychology students completing their master's in professional psychology (5 +1 program).
